Like I said this is a school project, so let’s focuses on
nitrates!
Wait! What are nitrates? Why should you care about nitrates?
Well until about four days ago I didn’t know anything about nitrates, to me it
sounded like a kind of gas you would put in your car (it’s not by the way). So let’s
start from the ground up!
NITRATES!
A dictionary definition (found on: merriam-webster.com) says:
“Any salt or ester of nitric acid (HNO). The salts are
inorganic compounds with ionic bonds, containing the nitrateion (NO) and any cation.
Many, particularly ammonium nitrate, are used as agricultural fertilizers (see saltpeter).
Their runoff in surface water and groundwater can cause serious illness in
humans. The esters are organic compounds with covalent bonds, having the structure RONO, in which R represents an organic
combining group such as methyl, ethyl, or phenyl.”
So what dose that mean? No idea! Let’s find out!
Basically the long and complicated dictionary thing says
that nitrate is a kind of colorless compound that is found in the soil and is essential
for plant life. But nitrate can be very harmful when found in water, giving
young children Blue Baby Syndrome.
And know you know more about Nitrates then you did before (I
hope!) I hope to write more later but right now I have to go and do other stuff
(like updating my fanfiction story)!
